At Colgate Primary School, Design Technology (DT) is an important part of teaching and learning and is taught from EYFS to Year 6. It is about providing opportunity for children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs. Children will also develop skills alongside the design process across five key areas: cooking and nutrition, structures, mechanisms, electrical systems and textiles.
We follow the ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ approach to the teaching of DT, as outlined in the National Curriculum Programmes of Study document. When required, we use schemes of work to support our planning and teaching of DT in Years 1-6. This ensures a well-structured progression of DT knowledge and skills throughout the school.
Teaching of DT varies, and in some classes, is taught on a half-termly basis which alternates with Art. Where possible, a specific week in a half term may be dedicated to DT learning, allowing children to really engage with the subject on a deeper level. Being a small school, the majority of lessons take place in mixed ability year groups, however, specific support is put in place so that all children, regardless of their starting point, can meet the learning objective. We hope to develop children’s skills, enabling them to become critical thinkers who challenge themselves, whilst building resilience.
